Giving your client a static image of the 'proposed' design (maybe multiple) is a standard exercise in the web industry.
There has been alot of talk recently about getting out of this habit and making fully interactive prototypes, giving the client the full design experience. http://jeffcroft.com/links/2008/sep/26/and...design-visuals/ My personal take is that it just wont work for my business and alot of other's. Due to not only the amount of extra time needed for a non-approved design or even designs, but the low budget most clients work with. I can see the benefits of having such a perfect system, but i think thats all it is, wishful thinking. And where is the line drawn? some sites have multiple sections, doing a site for a government body or large corporation could include many drastic design changes throughout the website, would a fully interactive visual need making for all of them? What are your views on the subject? -------------------- |

It's a good idea and wholly feasible if you build such an exercise into the budget - if you undertake this exercise without increasing your budget, you're just earning less money.

I suppose it's doable when you have Mr.Clarkes budgets to work with; and certainly something to consider for larger projects. But, as suggested by both of you, for the 'bread and butter' work, it's just not cost effective enough to include this at the design stage.
For the most part, you can show clients functionality, both administrative and user facing through a demo site - as you gain more customers your demo site can get more complex with tested plugins / themes and bespoke coding to show future customers. An interesting topic! -------------------- |

I'm in full agreement that it's just not cost effective. And clients don't realize that they need to pay for the time you spent before they contracted you, after they have contracted you. So when you provide your quote that includes the time spent building the mockup, they are less likely to go with you, and more likely to pick someone who didn't do the interactive markup, but gave a cheaper quote.
