Recently I moved a site to a new hosting company. After pointing the name servers to the new host, the site has been switching back and forth between the old server and the new server. I know that it takes 24-48 hours to fully propagate.

Here's the strange thing. Sometimes I get the old server in one browser and the new server in another browser. For example, in Firefox I am able to see the site on the new server and browse around. In Opera, I am seeing the older server even after completely clearing the browser cache. This has been going on for the past two days.

Has anyone else seen this? Very strange.

Pure speculation, but maybe they are accessing different ... domain name registrars (or whatever they are called - the things that keep an index of ip addresses referenced to domain names). So Safari is accessing one that still hasn't made the switch over to the new site, and FF is accessing a different one that has.

Again, pure speculation.

I'd contact the support team at the domain name provider, just to be on the safe side. Two days is one-day too many.

Actually in some cases 2 days before DNS propagates is normal. It all depends on ISP's name servers and how often they do full updates. It doesn't surprise me one browser is loading the page while another isn't, browsers commonly cache content and DNS lookups, so one browser is using cached information for where to find the web page, and the other is using the more up-to-date information.

If it takes longer than a couple days, then something doesn't seem right to me. Most DNS servers will have updated in 24 hours, but some DNS servers update at a slower rate and I have even heard 72 hours in some cases.

If you are really concerned, check the WHOIS details on major players like Verisign or Network Solutions, if the DNS entries look right on their servers, then you should be fine.

Oops I realise you said it has already been a couple of days. If your still not getting any love from your web host or from your domain registra, drop me a private message and I'll see if there is anyway I can assist you by checking your DNS entries from different locations, etc.

Cheers,
Leigh

It took more than three days to propogate the new domain name. It has never taken that long before. In the meantime, I decided to go with a different domain name altogether:

Coupons Dealuxe

Having hyphens in the URL was just not sitting right.

It was very strange, because I had repeatedly cleared both caches on each browser and also tested with two computers. The only thing I can think of is that maybe the DNS cache on Opera doesn't get cleared properly. But, I think I was also seeing this in Epiphany. Any how, it is all propagated at this point.
