I don't like Network Solutions for a variety of reasons, and today I found yet another.
At some point they implemented a 5 day wait to transfer a domain from their service to another registrar. You put in the request to transfer, NetSol gives you the transfer authorization code instantly, but then you have to wait 5 days until they release the domain. There's no way to "approve" the transfer, instead you "approve" it by not cancelling it during the 5 day wait. |

Been there, done that. I actually moved away from them before all the bad press, simply because they were a lot more expensive than virtually everyone else. I still don't really understand how they're in business. They offer an identical product, with inferior service, for more money than their competitors. Now usually I wouldn't all-out dismiss a company so easily, but from personal experience I think Network Solutions deserve it.

Yeah, whenever I get a client that's using them like the one today I immediately try to get them switched. Even worse is when they use NetSol's hosting too
I can only guess that brand recognition is what brings people to them. |

I can only guess that brand recognition is what brings people to them. Also, I bet they get a lot of people because of that thing where they put a domain on hold anytime somebody looks one up through them. I used them once to check if a domain was available and what the price would be. The order started off at a low price, but by the time I was ready to check out, they wanted a lot more money to buy it, so I cancelled the order. I then tried to look up the same domain somewhere else and it was listed as unavailable. I had to call Network Solutions to get them to take the hold off. -------------------- |

That's the sleaziest marketing tactic ever.
I heard of someone doing that a few months ago (maybe the same company?) and they were in the midst of a lawsuit over it. -------------------- |

I gave up on NetSol over ten years ago. That's when competition started to appear, offering web-managed domains for $15 a year while NetSol was still charging $50 and required a multi-step e-mail verification process for any changes.
I'm actuall surprised they are still around! -------------------- |

Welcome Gerry and thanks for checking in.
As mentioned at the start of the thread I'd like to see an easy way to opt out of the 5 day wait for the transfer to take place. Once you trade all the auth codes and email approvals around I'd think it's pretty obvious that the transfer is approved and desired, and you have an easy way to cancel the transfer, so why not just add a final "complete transfer" link too? At some point at the end of these 5 days that transfer is finally going to take effect, and my client's website and email are going to go down until I notice that the change has happened and go in and set the custom DNS entries on the new registrar. With any other company I'd just do this all in the middle of the night, but NetSol apparently doesn't give me that kind of control. Somehow I'm sure this is going to involve me getting woken up by a call from the client. Making my job as a developer more difficult is the primary reason I don't like working with NetSol. I hate explaining to clients that we're waiting on something from a 3rd party. Otherwise as mentioned in this thread, the domain pricing just isn't competitive with other registrars. I don't mind paying more if I get something extra of value out of it, but namecheap, godaddy, etc give me everything that NetSol does for around $6 a year and the worst I have to deal with is some upselling attempts (which NetSol has too). |

QUOTE Seriously guys, I'm here for good not bad. I really want to help people who need it and if anyone has feedback on how we can make things better I'd love to hear it. Is it true you guys lock domain names when someone uses your site to search for one? -------------------- |

If he really does come back, you gotta give the guy credit for making the effort. If he doesn't, then I guess that shows the kind of service you can expect from them.

I have a feeling the carefully planned corporate response will be something like, "Yes we do, but we do it with our customers' best interest in mind. You see, we hold the domain names to protect them from being snatched up by someone else before our customer can complete his or her order."

If they ask the customer during the process if they would like this service, then it's a good service. But if they do it automatically without telling the customer, then such an answer would just be an attempt at justifying a sleazy business practice.
I'm still curious if he will come back. I hope he will! -------------------- |

they don't want to loose and beside they are one of the pioneer of domain registration ... or internet services provider. -------------------- Make Money Online - shows you ways to make money online that work for me.
