nd which page if duplicate (or too similar, dependent on answer to above) should you choose to allow indexing? I'm figuring it would be the page closest to root or in root, or is there a more important factor than this such as links?

Theres 1000's of pages out there (using feeds, syndication etc) one of the big things right now is sharing information across the web meaning theres going to be hundreds of sites with the same articles. So i wouldnt worry about that.

That's an interesting point, I hadn't thought about that.
I was concerned about Google taking less interest in my site by finding pages within the site with almost duplicate content, i.e. almost the same content (product lists and descriptions) but with different 'headlines'. Almost as if these pages should be 301 redirects - do you see what I was meaning. I wasn't talking about similar content to other sites but.... hmmmm. No, wait . Sorry Sypher, can you just reconfirm this in case we do have our lines crossed. I really value your opinion. p.s. please check your inbox for pm + link This post has been edited by clubdesign: Nov 13 2008, 12:29 PM |

What the Search Engine does if it ever finds a page like that, is only serve one page (usually the highest ranked one) to the user.
Alot of pages use things like, small caption story click full link to see full story (with the same information appearing). You may of seen when you specifically type in for a certain keyword on google it has the main site (which may contain partial info), and another page indented below which may really fit that user's search. The search engine usually disregards the page with the small amount of info and serve up the page with all of the information. Alot of these small things dont necessarily hurt your ranking, people just try and grab any little thing as an excuse of why things arent working. Just use common sense, search engines hate penalizing sites and really really hate to remove them from the index(when using black hat seo). So they wont penalize websites for most of the small things people say they do, its usually just other factors that have decreased that specific pages SERP ranking. -------------------- |
