I recently split off and expanded an existing section of a website to create a new site. I want to move the old section to the new website and I'm wondering what the best technique is for SEO.
Is it better to leave the old section on the first site and then add links to the old pages that point to the corresponding pages on the new site? Or, is it better to do a 301 redirect to the corresponding pages? Would there be any negative consequences for redirecting from one domain to another domain? -------------------- Lenovo Coupons | HP Coupons - Shopping website for the "wiser miser"

There will be ranking losses, mainly because theres lots of variables involved in the seo ranking process with the domain and titles etc of the original site.
A 301 direct will transer the PAGE RANK, but the page rank doesnt effect your SERP placement. What is your current placement on those pages with the keywords your targetting? -------------------- |

Current SERP placement is top 5 - 15. The new site actually has better SEO for the targeted keyword phrases. However, it is a brand new site and the old site is ranked very well with Google. My concern is that once the 301 redirect kicks in and Google re-indexes to the new site, it will cause a big drop in the SERPs.

Yeh it will unfortunately. But depending on how competitive that search term is i cant say how big of a drop.
Getting similar titles, transferring the QUALITY link backs to the new domain and the drop shouldnt be too BIG. But the main problem your going to have is because the domain is new it will be sometime before the sanbox effect wears off. -------------------- |

Perhaps it is better to just leave the old pages on the existing site with a link to the new one, let it build up some pagerank and emerge from the sandbox, then do the redirect. -------------------- Lenovo Coupons | HP Coupons - Shopping website for the "wiser miser"
