It's common practice to avoid sounds at all cost, unless the site is largely built in Flash, then it isn't very rare. Overall, sounds should be avoided on the internet, unless it is from a video or song that the user requests to see/hear.

with javascript it can be done easily. Make sure the sound file is small (very very small)


have a search for some scripts on google... =)
