but i assumed that that was because i moved home from uni for easter and so i guess that means my IP address changed? (correct me if im wrong, i dont understand these things!

Again, it could be a IP issue ineke, im going to dig through the login script and see what exactly it does to determine any possible people may be having..

Yup, I'm pretty sure this is the case. I believe IPB generates a hash from various details, such as your ip, username, etc, and if one of those things changes, the hash changes, so it assumes you need to log in again.
If you're sure your environment is secure, then get your browser to remember your username and password.

Although until recently, that hasn't been a problem. I guess it could be IE7 here (which has been flaky) and more an issue of that.

i think karl meant remember as in remember the form entries, so you dont have to type them. just hit login..
