As more and more people migrate to Mac computers, I thought it'd be nice if we start listing the applications we use; where we got them (turn the name into the link), what its used for (briefly), and what they cost.

I'll edit this post to keep a running list going to give us a great resource.

Some people consider Yahoo Wigets very much crap. But I think it does have a few very useful tools that can be used to place information on your desktop.

You should add Parallels Desktop, cause well if you got an intel mac it is the shiznilly.

Say you have Mail open, and a New Message window that you're typing in, and maybe yet another separate window for an email you're reading. That's three Mail related windows.

Then, over in your web browser, something grabs your attention. Once that's overwith, you want to come back to your Mail window. So, you cmd+tab back to Mail, then you have to cmd+~ through the three Mail related windows until you get back to the exact one you were working with prior to jumping over to your browser.

Wouldn't it be nice if the task switcher (cmd+tab) not only showed you your open apps, but all your open windows?

One I forgot and I feel so bad I did! if you have a Macbook or Macbook pro or any apple laptop with Bluetooth and a blue tooth enabled phone you must, must, must have Blue Phone Elite! and Sailing Clicker which lets you use your phone as a remote for your computer Mac/Win.

Two more for the list. They are not necessarily useful unless you are into each sort of thing. I used to use deskshade and it does have some handy features like a "Hacker Log" which shows attempts complete with time stamp of attempted logins etc. And App Zapper which is not necessarily anything that couldn't be done with spotlight but if you are like me you try out all kinds of freeware and shareware apps and it does make the process of removing them zippy.

Deskshade 2

Deskshade allow syou to hide your desktop icons, set a movie as the background, lock your computer up tight and supports drag/drop of images from the web etc to your own personal menu item storage space. It also allows full access to iPhoto etc. Pretty handy.

App Zapper

App Zapper basically just removes the app and its associated files i.e. prefs, caches etc. Just quick.

CocoaMySQL is an application used to manage MySQL databases (locally or over the internet). It lets you add and remove databases and tables, change fields and indexes, view and filter the content of tables, add, edit and remove rows, perform custom queries and dump tables or entire databases.

From my limited experience, I prefer YourSQL to CocoaMySQL, but I guess it's just a matter of personal taste

TextWrangler is another freebie. It is basically BBEdit lite.

"TextWrangler is considerably more modern and capable than BBEdit Lite. Among other things, it can open files from (and save them) to remote FTP servers, offers a significantly more powerful grep engine, supports multi-byte and non-Roman text files, can perform Find Differences on pairs of files, and can be invoked from the Unix command line."
