Hello all,

I'm the poor sap responsible for the hosting of WebRadiance, as it's hosted on my VPS server along with a few of my other websites, a couple friend's websites, and a handful of my clients.

Every now and again, my VPS has an issue (and it needs a tissue) that I am unable to fix all by my lonesome, so I contact the provider of this VPS, slhost.com.

I am fekking sick and tired of slhost.

I've been tossing around the idea of moving my hosting services to a new provider without increasing my monthly cost very much (Currently, it's about $45 per month out of my pocket, with a little bit of income from my own clients). While slhost is quick to have issues fixed (normally about an hour, except for today's issue), I'm absolutely infuriated that it happens at least once every two months... sometimes more often.

So, bear with us as this seems to happen every now and again and feel free to throw suggestions for improvement my way (in a reply)... whether it's suggestions for a better server environment or just a "There there Marc, things will be OK"

Thanks for your patience, support, and cookies.

The issue is, I don't necessarily want cheap... I want the best quality I can afford for about as much as I'm paying now. It's not the monthly payment that's pissing me off, it's the quality of service. I'm eyeballing MediaTemple at the moment...

Sighs.

I use Bluehost. Its cheap as well - I pay 100 bux american a year including one domain name, and Ive never seen it down yet. And they always seem to be adding new servers and this and that (stuff I dont understand) and sending mails to me to tell me that they have done it. The service they provide is really good too. The only thing I have ever found that I couldn't do with them was host ffmpeg sites - I had to get a different provider for that.

edit: I know crap about servers though - namely, whats this VPS you speak of? Something tells me bluehost isn't VPS.

VPS stands for Virtual Private Server. It's a level of service, more than a brand or anything like that.

Typically you start with shared hosting, then upgrade to VPS, then you move up to dedicated.

Here's more info: http://en.wikipedia...._private_server

You might want to check out bluehost.com. Plans vary. Generally a good price. I use it to host my website. (Profile)

Bluehost do not provide VPS.

There are many, many VPS providers out there, but assessing their quality could be quite challenging. Most people go for shared hosting. I can give you recommendations for dedicated hosting, but all I can do for VPS is point at companies who provide it.

This VPS guide from Webhost magazine suggests you might want to look at SPRY, Liquidweb and Jumpline. Actually SPRY look really rather good...

We'll be on a MediaTemple dedicated-virtual server within about two months.

Will we notice any disruption in this website when you make the server switch?

Yes. The website will be unavailable for as long as it takes your DNS to update with the IP address of the new server. Nowadays that is typically less than an hour or two, but can be up to a day.
