is there a way to embed fonts on a website that will work on every browser and across platforms? without using flash of course. i have been reading online and can't seem to find a clear answer. please let me what the options are.

Nope. sifr with Flash is your best bet, otherwise you're stuck with browser by browser support or lack of it
