I am a beginning designer... in college for Graphic Design. We don't learn alot of Web Design for whatever reason, but web is my passion.

I just got hired free lance on a big design project to design a website for a locally owned and operated Jewelry store.

I have been having problems with designing a layout in Illustrator and then pieces the slices together to make a great looking site ON MY MAC with a 1024x728 screen and then bringing it up on my Moms PC with 800x600 screen and it looks like CRAP all out of whack.

WHAT DO I DO? I want this site to be versatile and look the same on all screen resolutions!?!

thanks for all your help.

You might be trying to run before you've learned to walk. You should study, and read-up on, layouts that are referred to as any one of the following terms:

"liquid", "fluid", "elastic", etc.

Learning how to code for, and what design considerations you need to remember before even opening Illustrator, will save you hours/days of frustration later.

Have you sat down and analysed your project?

Get your pen and paper out and sketch the pages out.

Do you actually need to boot up Illustrator... Maybe it might be best to load up DW/Notepad whichever you use and start laying down your divs.

Once you have laid down your divs plan how the page would stretch on varying resolutions.

If you need help making DIVS/Layouts perhaps consider seeking the advice of a professional designer or consult google and search for the relevant css layout. As above: "liquid", "fluid", "elastic", etc.

You can also talk to the jewelery store - maybe they don't care if the site is viewable in 800x600. After all, most people who can afford expensive jewelery can probably also afford a 1024x768 monitor! If you are lucky, they will already have an analytics program running on their server that will give you a breakdown of how many users are using what size of monitors. (my server has built in analytics, but they have to be enabled).
