hi

I need to learn how to design a web-site. I am planning to start this as a hobby and if all goes well, maybe even start a side job as a web-designer. What type of program should I learn?
Is i need to to learn any CMS or start with basic thing.

I would start by learning the fundamentals.

A working knowledge of XHTML and CSS, and a graphics program.
The best place to start: http://www.w3schools...tml/default.asp

Most people use either fireworks or photoshop. A free online equivalent is http://www.gimp.org/

Hi,

Its a good option to start website designer as a freelancer. I like your idea to first start as a hobby. First start with basic skill of designing and implement creative idea in pages. Than start with basic skill like HTML, CSS, Java Script . You can easily prepare web site using these softwares .They all are easy to use.Than Start photo shop and Dream weaver, Flash. CMS is a content management system I think its a last option .:)

If you want to learn and work with HTML initially you should try to learn from site w3schools.com it is really best site for beginner and after that you should try to make two or three column site and don't use CMS initially to learn HTML because here so complicated HTML is used.

Another way is find sites that you really like and admire then view the source code and study it for structure. Sitepoint also has a great resource for HTML and CSS worth taking a look. CSS-tricks.com have some very good screencasts the early ones are aimed at the novice.

HTML is something we need to focus first. I'd like to start this one as a hobby as well. Designing a website is very in-demand today.

I don't like CMS's. Because they are made by others. So there should be some limitations on those. I think learning HTML,CSS is the better option.

I have used the same programs for web design for 10 years, Dreamweaver and Fireworks. You can do it without understanding HTML and CSS but you wont get very far, you should really start by learning about those. Check out HTML or CSS tutorials on line or get a book at your bookstore.

You can actually use a template if you want. Use HTML, PHP, and MySQL as well. I believe that they're all free and can give you a good start.
