I am planning to start my own web developing business. First, I will be starting off at home and then seeing how it goes and will decide to take it to a bigger level. Keeping in mind the present scenario, web designing and internet based business are proving to be one of the most profitable businesses, but having said that it’s important here to deliver the best. I just want to get as much information as I can and tips before really getting into it. I am planning to start with one or two small projects and then thinking of expanding my business when having enough of work and resource. What do you people think on that?

You remind me of myself a few years back. I did that very same thing and have been moving forward ever since. I'd be happy to answer specific questions for you as they arise.

Make sure you have enough monthly income coming in (from hosting, maintenance etc) to sustain yourself, before quitting any kind of current job.

You need a business plan (what you'll do, how you'll do it, and who your customers are going to be). That's the short version.
You need enough working capital to keep your business going until it can pay for itself.
I would highly recommend a class on small business - check with your local SBA (Small Business Administration). They can offer a lot of help.
I've started and run several small businesses. I currently manage my husbands small business.
Think through all the possible scenarios (good, best, bad, and worst). How will deal with each of these.

Good Luck

I tried myself and found that the well established developers and company's can turn out an entire site in less than 4 hours. So your going to find it is harder, I have been advertising on-line for 4 years and only had 2 clients and one of them went over to someone who said they could do better, when all they did was ruin all the hard work I put into getting this guys site listed in the top 3 returns and now no sign of the site to be found...

4 hours? What are they on crack?

A good site takes from weeks to months to develop. No one expects a site within a day lol.

My advice, dont go for the cheap work.

Theres a tonne of great advice out on the web that can help you. Try Boagworld, they seem to discuss web business alot aswell as loads of other useful stuff. I am reading "Mark Boulton's Designing for the Web" PDF and it has loads of great advice in it and only £12 well worth the money. Marc Amos suggested a book to me about setting up a web buisness which i bought and it prooved very positive (cant remember the name).

Also remember you are the expert. Never underestimate yourself and never promise a site within 4hours thats just mental...

Its good that you are going to start a web development business but you should provide quality websites to the client at affordable price to sustain in this competitive market.
