hi all,
I've been asked by a friend to help with the monumental task of changing the background, border, text colors, font, font color, etc. on 1000 pages. This seems absolutely insane to me. I've never done this before - there's got to be an easier way! I don't think this person used a stylesheet to begin with. What can I do at this stage? It's taking me over 2 minutes per page to make all of the changes as he described. At this rate, wake me up at Christmas! He's sent me dreamweaver files for each page he wants me to help change the colors. Please, anyone, point me in the right direction! I'm not a webmaster.
Thanks

Using Dreamweaver, create a 'Site' out of all of the files (This just means telling Dreamweaver that all of the files amount to a website and has nothing to do with hosting, etc.), then do a site-wide Find and Replace. Here are some links to help:
- Create a Site: http://webdesign.about.com/od/dreamweaver/...ssdwnewsite.htm
- Find and Replace: http://webdesign.about.com/od/dreamweaverh...ind_replace.htm (Step #5, here, is precisely what I'm referring to)

Also, if you don't have Dreamweaver you could download Notepad++ (it's free), open up all of the files in it, and do a find/replace there, too.
Or you could tell your friend he or she really should have a web designer redesign their site altogether. If there's no stylesheet, I'm guessing the current site isn't too pretty.

Notepate++ has a "Find and replace in file directory" which is really helpful. Press Ctrl + H , then click "Find in files". You can do a find replace for whatever element you want. Hope that helps.

A good find and replace routine should indeed do the trick, although you need to be careful with replacements especially if colours are specified as regular text (e.g. "green") because those phrases are likely to appear in the website text as well. Also note that any 1000+ page site without stylesheets (or at least a central generation source using templates) is extremely prone to inconsistencies, which can be a problem for find and replace.
But I lean towards jameson's advice to use this opportunity to redesign. You're going through the whole site anyway, now is the time to move to stylesheets. If you don't move to stylesheets now, you'll be sorry the next time your friend wants a change.
Or just tell your friend you can't do this for him. Changing 1000+ pages is such a massive task that you can politely decline it.

Change the routine in fact be the case, but be careful when changing, especially if the colors are displayed as normal text (eg "green"), as these phrases may appear in the text website. Also note that the entire 1000 site page without style sheets (or at least a central source of production models using) is very prone to inconsistencies, which can be a problem to find and replace.
