The site I'm currently working on > http://althea.cs.uma...01ckcindex.html < needs a "forbidden" page at http://althea.cs.umass.edu/ckc/ - as it stands, there is a file list (ugly )

This is something I haven't done before. Could someone tell me how (preferably a custom one but the usual will do) or point me to a tutorial?

The easiest way is to just but a blank index.html file in there, which will get shown when they go to the directory by default.

Aside from that you can possibly set the folder to not show the file list on the server. And the most complex method (though still not hard) is to make an .htaccess file.

I did end up doing the .htaccess thing - worked like a charm and you're right, it wasn't heard one I understood the directions.

To create custom forbidden error you should not give permission to access ckc/ file on this server there should be a dialog box that prompt for user name and password

I can see where that would be useful in some instances. In this case, though, no one needs to access that page but me, and anyone in my organization who has reason to want to is free to ask. No problem.

When I said "custom" I had hoped to create a simple page with the CKC design theme and a link to the correct portal - but there is really no need. It's fine as it is now, and thanks for all the help!

To customize it you could use the .htaccess to redirect to a file like "forbidden.html" with the design you want.
