Just wondering how some of you guys came up with your company names. I am finding it very hard to come up with another company name, everything seems to be taken. You see I sold my company, and want to start another one...but all the domains are taken...and I guess I just am not creative...lol

Mine is Wardner Web Solutions.

Wardner came from my name = William Gardner > Wardner (First letter of first name, no first letter of second)

Mine is area-based. I live next to Boston, and I do 'web' things, hence "Boston Web Studio".

It also helped solidify my decision when I discovered the domain name was available :ninja:

I've been through a couple company names, and here's a few things that influenced me in picking Spark9. Basically I got tired of spelling out my email address on the phone so i decided to go for something 1) short and 2) easy to spell and 3) that I could get a .com domain for.

Aside from those I don't think the name really needs to mean something, ie: ebay, amazon, starbucks, digg, lycos

I had a great business name, but someone offered me allot of money for the domain name, and I sold. So now I have to find another business name quick. But everything seems to be taken, and I have no creativity...lol

Well, obviously any good name (like those Cat mentions: Yahoo, Google, ebay, Amazon, Nike) are made up words which could theoretically exist. The problem is that they aren't necessarily memorable unless you're a very successful business. I mean, when you think about it, 'Google' is a pretty odd word, but I do like it.

For smaller company names, it can often be important to make what you do obvious from the name of the company, eg: Boston Web Studio.

Yes, but how does the word 'Amazon' have anything to do with what the company does? So even though the word exists, it's still meaningless as the company name, unless you already know what Amazon do.

Following Amazon's way, which I like, you could think of any random *real* name, but one that is truly unrelated, and just use it. It may confuse your clients at first, because it wouldn't lend to inform them what you do, but after a while it would stick and be memorable for them.

Well, yes, but people have to find your website or remember the URL first (or at least remember the name). Knowing a little about the company (or a link) can obviously help before you visit/click.
