Ok, I have this problem on only the home page of my website, all of the other pages seem to work...at the moment I am not sure what I did different on the home page from the rest of the pages as it is a copy. Here is the page, click the validat link at the bottom....the xhtml one.

Here is the URL.

Error reads...

Quote

Byte-Order Mark found in UTF-8 File.

The Unicode Byte-Order Mark (BOM) in UTF-8 encoded files is known to cause problems for some text editors and older browsers. You may want to consider avoiding its use until it is better supported.

I don't understand? What is wrong?

After a quick Google:
http://www.stanford....errata/BOM.html

I suspected it might be something like that - but tracking it down would be next to impossible if you didn't know where it was, as it would probably be invisible in your text editor. What editor do you usually user and on which platform?

If you're on windows, you could try copying the contents of index.html to a new file and saving it, then testing that new HTML file.

But apparently, this problem shouldn't matter unless you're planning to use a server-side programming language, in which case it can cause problems when sending headers.

I have tried coping and pasting it into a new window. Does not work. Just don't know why it is there.

You must have edited the file with a particular text editor? Problems like this often occur when you switch between Mac/Linux to Windows or vice versa.

Well, I'm pretty certain that Textpad should create a new file and save it without the Byte-Order Mark. Did you say that it's only a problem for this page - and not others on your website? Are you sure you didn't do anything else in particular for this file?

I'm not really sure what else to suggest, but it's important to remember that your page is valid. This is only a warning from the validator and doesn't break your efforts to create a valid page.

If you're using Linux hosting, then notepad probably would cause an issue. Windows and Unix files often have these differences. I believe some FTP programs can compensate - which program are you using?

Thanks, just downloaded it, I like it. More features than regular notepad...but not as good as textpad in my opinion. I just wish text-pad was free.

The best thing about Textpad is when you're dealing with very large files - It reads the files straight into memory and does almost no processing on them, so it's by far the fastest program you can use to edit large files. Other than command line editors on Linux, nothing else has ever come close to that speed in my experience.
